A Giant Among Crustaceans

A new species of crustacean, Megabathynella totemensis, has been discovered in a limestone cave system in Australia's Northern Territory. The translucent creatures, measuring nearly six millimetres, were found swimming in shallow underground pools.

Within their taxonomic group, this size is considered enormous. The species boasts up to 11 claws, significantly more than the average of seven found in related species.

Unique Features Warrant New Genus

The combination of size, claw count, and other physical features was so distinct that researchers determined the organism could not be placed in any existing genus. This led to the creation of a new genus for the species.

The discovery, published in the European Journal of Taxonomy, represents the first recorded instance of a Bathynellacea species in an Australian cave.

Underground Giants: Size Matters

The study defines 'giant' species as those larger than 4 mm, and 'large' species as those between 2.5-4 mm. At nearly six millimetres, M. totemensis easily surpasses the giant threshold.

The genus name, Megabathynella, derives from the Greek megas, meaning big. The species name, totemensis, refers to Totem Pole Cave, where the specimens were collected.

Claws and Other Distinctions

The claw count drew particular attention from the research team. “The new genus has numerous claws, … up to 11, and only some species of Billibathynella come close, with 10 claws, but the most common state is seven claws,” according to the study.

This represents roughly 57 percent more claws than most related species carry. The specimens also have more than 12 articles on the antennules and the exopod of the thoracopods contains up to 17 articles.

A Global Phenomenon

The discovery fits a broader geographical pattern. The authors noted that large and giant species of Bathynellacea have now been documented on every continent.

In Australia, previous discoveries of related species have occurred in groundwater systems in Western Australia and Queensland, but none in cave habitats.

Unanswered Questions Remain

The factors driving larger body size and increased morphological complexity in subterranean crustaceans remain unconfirmed. The authors wrote that “future studies could explore the factors that lead to this unusually large size and proliferation of articles and setae observed.”

More than 80 individuals were observed in shallow pools within Totem Pole Cave. The researchers noted that the organisms were “hiding in plain sight” in an area previously unsurveyed for such fauna.

Researchers expect additional finds as large portions of Australia’s cave systems and groundwater aquifers remain unsurveyed. Future studies will likely focus on understanding the evolutionary pressures that lead to gigantism in these subterranean crustaceans.
