A significant meeting took place in Mumbai between two distinguished Gandhian social activists from across the nation: Anna Hazare and Dr. Rajagopal PV, President of the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram, Jaura. The meeting aimed to promote global peace, non-violence, and social harmony.
Both leaders expressed deep concern over the escalating wars, violent conflicts, and hatred spreading across the globe. Amidst the current global landscape, where many nations are grappling with the challenges of war, this meeting is considered highly significant.
Emphasis on Truth, Love, and Compassion
During their dialogue, the two social reformers emphasized that the world needs the path of truth, love, and human compassion shown by Mahatma Gandhi, rather than a race for modern weaponry.
Dr. Rajagopal PV lauded Anna Hazare as a great social worker and expressed his gratitude. He described Anna Hazare's unwavering dedication to public service and Gandhian values as an inspiring example.
In response, Anna Hazare conveyed his affection and respect for Dr. Rajagopal PV. He praised Dr. Rajagopal's work for the weaker sections, tribals, and the underprivileged, referring to him as 'Padayatra Gandhi' (Pilgrimage Gandhi).
Call for Unity in Spreading Non-Violence
Amidst the current global unrest, both Gandhian thinkers agreed that the world urgently needs peace and harmony. They stated that war and violence pose a great threat to humanity and that the only effective way to combat them is by adopting the path of non-violence taught by Mahatma Gandhi.
"The arms race and diplomatic failures are leading us towards destruction. At such a time, we must promote Gandhi's teachings of peace and truth as a powerful global campaign," Dr. Rajagopal PV said. He expressed his desire to work in this direction alongside mass leaders like Anna Hazare.
Anna Hazare strongly supported this idea, stating that he has always stood with non-violent movements. "The power of the people is the greatest power. If we can educate people about the importance of non-violence and their ability to resolve issues peacefully, we can surely make the world a better place," he stated.
He emphasized that forces sowing seeds of hatred and division can only be countered with love and compassion.
Recalling the Historic Surrender in Chambal
Anna Hazare, who recently recovered from an illness and returned home, had been avoiding visitors on doctors' advice. However, he made a special exception for Dr. Rajagopal PV for a personal meeting.
During their conversation, when the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram in Jaura and the historic dacoit surrender in Chambal were mentioned, Anna Hazare became emotional. He described the event on April 14, 1972, as a unique example of transformation from violence to non-violence and pledged full support for efforts to make Chambal a center for world peace.
This historic event, where hundreds of dacoits in Chambal surrendered, was a testament to the power of Gandhian ideology. Dr. Rajagopal PV highlighted the significance of this event, stating, "This moment shows how violent tendencies can be brought to the path of peace through love, compassion, and firm resolve."
Anna Hazare appreciated the work done by the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram in establishing peace in Chambal and integrating marginalized sections of society into the mainstream. He expressed hope that this experience would serve as a source of inspiration for other conflict zones.
Pledge for Future Joint Efforts
On this occasion, Dr. Rajagopal PV invited Anna Hazare to participate in the Dacoit Surrender Day program to be held next year in Jaura. Anna Hazare gladly accepted the invitation, stating that if his health permits, he will definitely visit Jaura.
This visit will be instrumental in spreading the message of peace and non-violence not only in India but globally. At the conclusion of the meeting, Anna Hazare presented his two books, 'Mera Gaon Mera Teerth' (My Village My Pilgrimage) and 'Anubhav Ke Bol' (Words of Experience), to Dr. Rajagopal PV. These books reflect his life experiences and commitment to social work.
He blessed the Ashram workers, stating that they could contact him for guidance if needed. He expressed confidence that the Mahatma Gandhi Seva Ashram in Jaura, already a center of Gandhian values, will play an even more significant role in peace and social justice in the future.
This meeting is considered a crucial step towards establishing Gandhian ideology as a new global movement. Both stalwarts pledged to make concrete efforts together for the establishment of peace and human harmony in the future.
This meeting will prove to be an inspiring initiative in taking the message of global peace and non-violence to the masses, especially at a time when the world is facing the horrors of war. Together, they advocated for a world order based not on the power of weapons, but on the power of human values.
