Inmates' Mental Health Prioritized in Central Jail Bhopal

The Jail Department has initiated a significant program to address the mental health of inmates across the state's prisons. As part of this effort, a special awareness and counseling session was organized at Central Jail Bhopal.

This initiative is being conducted under the guidance of Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Dr. Varun Kapoor. The session on September 15, 2026, was a direct outcome of a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Jail Department and the National Rail and Transport University, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Awareness and Counseling Session

During the camp, Forensic Psychologist Mr. Om Tiwari engaged directly with the inmates. He educated them on the importance of mental health, mental stress, and related issues. Mr. Tiwari made an effort to understand the personal and psychological challenges faced by the inmates and provided counseling as needed.

The inmates participated with great enthusiasm, posing their questions and concerns about mental health to the expert. Mr. Om Tiwari listened attentively and offered them essential guidance and advice. The primary aim of this session was to enhance mental health awareness among inmates and equip them to cope with their psychological challenges.

Integral Part of Correctional Services

The Jail Department considers the mental health, behavioral improvement, and rehabilitation of inmates as a crucial component of correctional services. Through the MOU with the National Rail and Transport University, expert counseling services are being made accessible to incarcerated individuals. This initiative marks a significant step towards promoting the overall well-being of inmates.

Superintendent of Central Jail Bhopal, Mr. Maanendra Parihar, along with other officials and staff from the Jail Department, were present at the event, emphasizing the importance of this endeavor.
