Early Snow Blankets Himalayan Regions

In the middle of September, specifically around September 17-18, the higher reaches of Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand witnessed the season's first snowfall, occurring significantly ahead of schedule. This unexpected weather event has draped the mountainous regions in a white blanket.

The snowfall has brought a noticeable drop in temperatures to the plains as well, giving a premonition of the approaching winter. In Kashmir, higher altitude areas like Gulmarg's Apharwat and Gondola Phase 2, the Gurez sector, Tulail Valley, and Kabuli Gali in Bandipora received fresh snow. This has created a picturesque white landscape, potentially becoming a new attraction for tourists.

Himachal and Uttarakhand Follow Suit

Himachal Pradesh has also seen a shift in weather. In areas like Lahaul-Spiti, the Rohtang Pass, Atal Tunnel, and the higher peaks around Manali, a layer of 1 to 1.5 inches of snow was recorded. This snowfall is approximately a month earlier than usual, indicating a disruption in the region's typical weather cycle.

Similarly, light snowfall has dusted the peaks of the Himalayan and higher mountainous regions in Uttarakhand. The unseasonal snow in the mountains, coupled with rains in lower areas, has significantly reduced temperatures in the plains, hastening the onset of winter and compelling residents to seek warm clothing.

Impact and Outlook

According to the Meteorological Department, the weather is expected to clear up in the next few days following this seasonal change. However, the long-term effects of this unexpected snowfall on local life and tourism are yet to be assessed.
