The devastating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has edged closer to a grim milestone, with reported deaths nearing 5,000. This ongoing epidemic has now solidified its place as the world's second-largest recorded Ebola outbreak.

According to the latest official figures released on Friday, the DRC has recorded a staggering 10,274 confirmed Ebola cases, resulting in 4,992 fatalities as of October 28. This translates to a concerning case fatality rate of 48.6 percent. The virus's relentless spread has impacted 67 health zones across eight of the country's 26 provinces, highlighting the extensive reach of this public health crisis.

Healthcare Workers Under Threat

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has used the platform X to pay tribute to Dr. Marie-France Shogogo, who tragically succumbed to Ebola in Beni, located in the conflict-affected North Kivu Province. The continental health agency issued a powerful plea for enhanced protection for frontline medical personnel, emphasizing, "Protect those who protect us," as reported by Xinhua news agency.

This somber acknowledgement underscores the extreme dangers faced by healthcare professionals. Local health sources have reported that three doctors died from Ebola within a 72-hour period at an Ebola treatment center in Beni alone, a stark illustration of the perilous conditions medical staff are confronting.

Strain on North Kivu's Health System

The Beni health zone, in particular, has reported 661 cases, with 443 deaths, carrying a particularly high case fatality rate of 67.0 percent. Across the entire North Kivu province, the toll stands at 2,391 confirmed cases and 1,341 deaths. The report further details the immense pressure on the province's healthcare infrastructure.

Ebola treatment facilities in North Kivu are operating at 86.3 percent capacity, nearing their operational limits. Compounding the challenge, only 82.2 percent of identified contacts are being monitored, falling short of the crucial 95 percent target necessary for effective outbreak containment.

Second Largest Outbreak Recorded

The current Ebola outbreak was officially declared on May 15 and is attributed to the Bundibugyo Ebola virus. Its escalating numbers have propelled it to become the second-most significant Ebola outbreak documented in global history, a testament to its scale and severity.
