Farmers Grapple with Fertilizer and Power Shortages

As the Rabi season commences in the Deori assembly constituency of Sagar district, Madhya Pradesh, farmers are confronting a severe crisis involving shortages of fertilizers and electricity. In response, the Block Congress Committee staged an aggressive demonstration on Tuesday in front of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's (SDM) office, led by former cabinet minister Harsh Yadav. Protesters voiced their anger against the government and administration, demanding immediate solutions to these pressing issues.

Farmers and Congress workers submitted a memorandum to the Tehsildar addressed to the Hon'ble Governor, expressing deep concern over the unavailability of essential resources for critical Rabi season crops. The memorandum specifically highlighted a significant deficit in DAP fertilizer. Farmers reported facing immense difficulties in obtaining fertilizer due to technical glitches in the online token booking system. The timely availability of fertilizer is crucial for horticultural crops like garlic, onion, and tomatoes, as delays in sowing and transplanting directly risk impacting yields.

Demand for Uninterrupted Power and Canal Repairs

Beyond the fertilizer scarcity, the erratic power supply has further exacerbated the farmers' plight. Farmers are experiencing considerable challenges in irrigating their fields due to declared and undeclared power cuts, ostensibly for maintenance, and issues with faulty transformers. The memorandum urges for the assurance of uninterrupted power supply so that crops can be watered on time. Additionally, an urgent appeal was made for the immediate repair of damaged canals in the region to ensure the smooth flow of irrigation water to the fields.

“The Rabi season is the most critical period for agricultural activities. Shortages of resources at such a crucial juncture are creating a severe economic crisis for farmers,” stated former cabinet minister Harsh Yadav, criticizing the government. He added that farmers are suffering due to the administration's apathy.

The protest saw the participation of numerous Congress workers and local farmers, including Block Congress President Ashish Bawa Rajauria, Gaurav Pandey, and Amit Sarvaiya. The Congress has issued a warning that if the farmers' problems are not resolved promptly and effectively, the protest movement will be intensified.
