Florida, USA: Blue Origin is gearing up to launch NASA’s ESCAPADE mission to Mars later this month or in early November, a project designed to investigate why the Red Planet is gradually losing its atmosphere. The mission will deploy two small spacecraft, dubbed Blue and Gold, aboard the New Glenn rocket, which was rolled out to its launchpad in Florida on October 8.
A Twin-Probe Approach to a Longstanding Mystery
The ESCAPADE probes—short for Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers—will track how charged particles from the Sun, known as the solar wind, strip away Mars’ thin atmosphere. Unlike India’s 2013 Mangalyaan (Mars Orbiter Mission), which orbited Mars with a single spacecraft for eight years, ESCAPADE will observe the planet simultaneously from two locations.
“Having two spacecraft gives us real-time data on how solar activity interacts with Mars’ atmosphere and magnetic field,” said space analyst Girish Linganna. “It’s a more nuanced view than earlier missions could provide.”
Understanding this atmospheric loss is critical because Mars was once warmer and wetter, potentially capable of supporting life. Studying how and why it lost its air and water could offer insights not only into Mars’ history but also into the long-term stability of Earth’s atmosphere.
Implications for India’s Mars Ambitions
The mission comes at a pivotal moment for ISRO, which has approved its next Mars mission, Mangalyaan-2, slated to carry a rover, a helicopter, and a sky crane landing system. Indian scientists are monitoring ESCAPADE closely to see which technologies and techniques could inform their own mission design.
“Mangalyaan showed that India could reach Mars on a limited budget, less than the cost of a Hollywood space movie,” Linganna noted. “Now, missions like ESCAPADE provide new lessons for multi-probe operations and advanced atmospheric measurements.”
Private Spaceflight and Global Collaboration
ESCAPADE also highlights the growing role of private companies in deep-space exploration. While Blue Origin’s first New Glenn launch earlier this year was mainly a test flight, this mission carries a scientific payload, underscoring the reliability of commercial rockets for planetary research.
Rocket Lab in California built the ESCAPADE probes, which are equipped with instruments to measure magnetic fields, plasma, and particles. The mission will work in coordination with NASA’s ongoing MAVEN mission, offering a three-dimensional view of how solar wind strips away Mars’ atmosphere.
Experts believe that increasing access to commercial launch vehicles could reduce costs for countries like India and foster greater international collaboration. “Commercial rockets are opening up new possibilities for science and exploration,” Linganna said.
The Red Planet Today
Mars’ current atmosphere is thin and cold, preventing liquid water from existing on its surface. Billions of years ago, the planet featured rivers, lakes, and possibly habitable environments. Scientists theorize that the gradual erosion of its atmosphere, accelerated by the loss of a global magnetic field, transformed Mars into the arid world we see today. ESCAPADE will provide critical data to test these hypotheses.
