BJP's Victory in Falta

The BJP has secured victory in the Falta Assembly constituency re-election. Debangshu Panda won by over 1.09 lakh votes. This victory brings the BJP's total to 208 seats out of 294 in the Bengal Legislative Assembly.

The CPI M-led Left Front secured the second position, indicating a potential resurgence. The Trinamool Congress was relegated to fourth place, signaling a major setback in their traditional stronghold.

Re-election Details

The repolling, held on May 21st across 285 polling stations, proceeded peacefully. Voter turnout was high, with over 87% of the constituency's 2.36 lakh voters participating.

Counting took place at Diamond Harbour Women’s College. Debangshu Panda secured over 1,49,000 votes, defeating CPI M's Sambhunath Kurmi, who received over 40,000 votes.

Political Reactions

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed gratitude, stating:

"Trinamool Congress’s notorious 'Diamond Harbour' model from today has been turned into a 'model defeat'. First of all, I offer my pranam to the people of Falta for sending our BJP candidate to the Legislative Assembly with huge mandates."

He further added:

"I had also made requests to you (voters) to make our candidate a winner with a margin of minimum one lakh votes. But you have given him more than that. I owe a lot to you and will pay it back through development works in Falta."

Trinamool's Setback

Trinamool Congress nominated candidate Jahangir Khan withdrew his candidature a day before the repolling. The Trinamool Congress had held the Falta seat since 2011.

The party's average vote share was around 54%. No major Trinamool leader, including Abhishek Banerjee, campaigned for Khan during the repolling phase.

Historical Context

In the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP secured around 37% of the votes in Falta. The party did not contest in 2011 and 2016. The CPI M had a 37% vote share in both 2011 and 2016.

CPI M leader Sujan Chakraborty commented:

"Trinamool Congress gave a walkover to the BJP but only the Left is in the battle."
