A late-night train derailment near Barcelona has left one person dead and 37 injured, after heavy rainfall caused a retaining wall to collapse onto an active commuter rail line, according to regional authorities.
The incident occurred at around 10 pm local time on Tuesday near Gelida, roughly 35 minutes outside Barcelona, involving a commuter service on the heavily used R4 line that connects multiple municipalities across Catalonia.
What caused the derailment
Officials said intense rainfall weakened the structure supporting the tracks, leading the retaining wall to give way as the train approached.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez acknowledged the tragedy, expressing solidarity with the victims and their families in a public message.
Interior and Security Minister Nuria Parlón and Territory Minister Silvia Paneque were en route to the crash site, regional authorities said, as investigations into safety conditions and infrastructure resilience began.

The derailment comes just two days after a separate high-speed rail crash in southern Spain, where two trains collided near Adamuz in Córdoba province, killing at least 41 people.
Spain had entered three days of national mourning following that disaster, with recovery operations still underway when the Barcelona-area derailment occurred.
