Delhi Meeting Amid Karnataka Power Tussle

The internal power struggle within the Karnataka Congress reached Delhi on Tuesday. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar held crucial meetings with the Congress high command.

The meetings occurred at Indira Bhavan. The goal was to address ongoing speculation about a potential leadership reshuffle in Karnataka.

Key Figures and Discussions

Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar met with key Congress leaders. These included Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal.

The Congress party aimed to quell growing speculation surrounding the power-sharing arrangement in Karnataka. The discussions covered several critical areas, including:

  • Cabinet expansion
  • Induction of new ministers
  • Rajya Sabha elections
  • MLC polls
  • Broader political developments

Statements Before the Meeting

Before departing for Delhi, Siddaramaiah stated he was unaware of the meeting's specific agenda. He confirmed he was invited by KC Venugopal for a meeting scheduled for 11 a.m. on May 26.

When questioned about leadership change speculation, he simply replied,

"Speculations are always there."

Attempting to Downplay the Significance

Congress leaders attempted to minimize the meeting's political implications. Congress leader Ramesh Babu stated the visit was related to consultations about Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections.

He emphasized the routine nature of selecting candidates for upcoming elections. He also mentioned the need to discuss issues with the AICC before the Assembly session in Karnataka.

Karnataka Congress in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala also dismissed speculation about a leadership change.

"Rajya Sabha elections have been notified. The party continues to have consultations. So please do not speculate. I quash all other speculations,"

Shivakumar's Confidence

Shivakumar expressed confidence about Congress's future in Karnataka. He predicted Congress's return to power in the 2028 Assembly elections.

He recalled his accurate prediction of the Congress victory in the 2023 elections.

"At a time when Union Home Minister Amit Shah was talking about the BJP's victory, I challenged that Congress would win 136 seats and we came to power,"

Background of Internal Conflict

The Congress leadership has intervened multiple times to manage tensions between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar since forming the government in 2023.

Shivakumar's supporters have repeatedly claimed a rotational chief ministership agreement existed. However, the party high command has never officially confirmed this arrangement.

BJP's Perspective

The opposition BJP has criticized the Congress. They claim the infighting harms governance and exposes divisions within the ruling party.

They see the prolonged uncertainty surrounding Karnataka’s leadership as a sign of instability.

What to Watch Next

The coming weeks will reveal if the Congress high command can effectively manage the internal tensions between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Keep an eye on cabinet reshuffles, key appointments, and public statements from both leaders for indications of the power balance within the Karnataka Congress.
