Siddaramaiah's Resignation

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation to the Governor's secretary on May 28, 2026, at Lok Bhavan. The Governor, Thaawarchand Gehlot, was out of station.

He informed his Cabinet colleagues of his decision during a breakfast meeting at his official residence in Bengaluru. This decision marks the end of his nearly five-decade long political career.

"Mr. Siddaramaiah will resign at 3:00 pm and he told the meeting that we should all make D.K. Shivakumar the new chief minister."

 

Another minister present at the breakfast meeting confirmed that D.K. Shivakumar is slated to succeed Siddaramaiah, as per the party high command's decision.

Supporters of D.K. Shivakumar gathered outside his residence, celebrating and distributing sweets, expressing their support for him becoming the next CM.

Security Measures

Bengaluru police have increased security across the city amid the political developments. Over 1,000 police personnel have been deployed at various locations.

Increased security is especially present at D.K. Shivakumar's residence in Sadashivanagar, and at Siddaramaiah's residences, Krishna and Cauvery.

Over 100 police personnel are stationed at Raj Bhavan.

Congress Unity

The Karnataka Congress unit posted images of Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar showing camaraderie during the breakfast meeting, conveying a message of unity. The post on X (formerly Twitter) read:
