Former Australian Cricketer Damien Martyn Hospitalised with Meningitis

Former Australian batsman Damien Martyn, 54, is currently in a Queensland hospital in an induced coma after being diagnosed with meningitis. Martyn reportedly fell ill on Boxing Day, with his condition confirmed on Tuesday evening.

Close friends and former teammates have expressed support and solidarity on social media. Darren Lehmann posted on X (formerly Twitter), sending "lots of love and prayers" to the cricketing legend. Speaking on behalf of Martyn’s family, close friend Adam Gilchrist assured that Martyn is receiving the best care, and that his partner Amanda and family are comforted by the outpouring of well-wishes.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg extended his concern, saying, "The best wishes of everyone at CA and in the wider cricket community are with him at this time."

Career Highlights

Damien Martyn, renowned for his elegant stroke play, played 67 Tests for Australia between 1992 and 2006, scoring 4,406 runs at an average of 46.37, including 13 centuries. After a six-year hiatus, he returned in 2000 and became a key member of Steve Waugh’s dominant side.

In ODIs, Martyn scored 5,346 runs at 40.80, including five centuries. He played a crucial role in Australia’s 2003 World Cup victory, scoring an unbeaten 88 in the final against India and sharing a 234-run partnership with Ricky Ponting.

Following his playing career, Martyn briefly worked in cricket commentary but has largely remained out of the public eye. Notably, just days before falling ill, he posted on X about the upcoming Boxing Day Test, reminiscing: "If the old brigade could play again then this would be it. Boxing Day test match. What a cauldron."
