WHO's Warning on Global Health Risks

The WHO has warned the world about the threat of fast-spreading diseases, citing the current Ebola and Hantavirus outbreaks.

"The recent Ebola and hantavirus outbreaks demonstrate that the world is still vulnerable to rapidly spreading infectious diseases." - Tedros Ghebreyesus, WHO Head

Ebola Outbreak Details and Spread

Ugandan authorities confirmed three new cases of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is currently no cure or vaccine.

The Ebola outbreak in central Africa is spreading rapidly, with almost 867 suspected cases and 204 deaths reported in Congo as of late Saturday.

The outbreak now affects three provinces in DRC, with the first case confirmed in South Kivu. Two cases, including one death, have also been confirmed in neighboring Uganda.

Understanding Ebola Virus

The Ebola outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain. The average Ebola disease case fatality rate is around 50 percent.

Ebola spreads by contact with body fluids of an infected person or animal, or contaminated objects. In rare instances, the virus has been observed to be airborne.

Governments worldwide are tightening border screening and quarantine preparedness in response to the outbreak.

Previous Actions by India

Earlier, on May 21, India issued a health advisory for passengers arriving from or transiting through Ebola-affected countries.

The advisory asked those with symptoms or exposure history to immediately report to airport health authorities before immigration clearance.

What to Watch Next

The global health community will be closely monitoring the effectiveness of border screenings and quarantine measures. Further updates from the WHO regarding the spread and containment efforts are expected in the coming weeks.
