Delhi Sizzles: Hottest May Night in 14 Years, IMD Issues Heat Warning

Top Summary

  • What happened: Delhi recorded its hottest May night in 14 years, with the minimum temperature reaching 32.4 degrees Celsius.
  • Why it matters: Elevated night temperatures exacerbate the impact of daytime heat, posing health risks.
  • What changes: The IMD advises citizens to stay vigilant and follow safety protocols against the heatwave.
  • Who is affected: Residents of Delhi, particularly vulnerable populations like the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

Record-Breaking Heat

Delhiites endured the hottest May night in 14 years. The minimum temperature soared to 32.4 degrees Celsius, a significant 5.7 degrees Celsius above normal.

This marks the second 'warm night' of the season. The previous instance occurred on May 21, with a temperature of 31.9 degrees Celsius.

IMD's Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continuing 'warm night' conditions. Temperatures are expected to range between 40 and 42 degrees Celsius.

"No large change in maximum temperatures till May 27 and a fall by 7–8 degrees Celsius thereafter (sic),"

said an IMD official.

Heatwave Criteria and Past Spells

The IMD defines a 'warm night' as when the maximum temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius. Also, the departure of the minimum temperature is 4.5 degrees Celsius or more above normal.

A heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature touches 45 degrees Celsius or above.

Previous Heatwave Spells

Delhi experienced two prior heatwave spells this season. From April 23-25, the city reeled under three consecutive heatwave days.

Safdarjung recorded one heatwave day on April 25, when the temperature reached 42.8 degrees Celsius.

Possible Relief: Rain and Thunderstorms

The IMD has predicted light to very light rain. This rainfall is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds of up to 60 kmph between May 28 and 31.

Worsening Air Quality

Intrusion of dust worsened Delhi’s air quality. The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 254.

The AQI later deteriorated to 281, at the higher end of the 'poor' range.

What to Watch Next

Monitor weather forecasts closely for updates on the predicted rainfall and thunderstorms. Pay attention to advisories from the IMD regarding heatwave safety protocols.
