AIIMS Bhopal: Early Screening Vital for Children with Sickle Cell Disease

Top Summary

  • What happened: AIIMS Bhopal study reveals hidden heart, kidney, and sleep complications in children with sickle cell disease (SCD).
  • Why it matters: Routine medical tests often fail to detect these serious health problems, leading to delayed treatment.
  • What changes for people: The study recommends comprehensive screening beyond routine blood tests for early detection and better long-term outcomes.
  • Who is affected: Children with sickle cell disease, particularly in Madhya Pradesh tribal areas, and their families.

Hidden Complications in Sickle Cell Disease

A recent study by AIIMS Bhopal highlights the need for advanced health screening in children with sickle cell disease (SCD). Researchers discovered signs of hidden heart, kidney, and sleep-related issues in many patients.

The study, conducted by the Department of Pediatrics's Division of Pediatric Nephrology and Hypertension, was published in the International Pediatric Nephrology journal. Dr. Harshitha S. conducted the research under the guidance of Dr. Girish Chandra Bhatt.

Key Findings on Heart and Kidney Health

Researchers used 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), revealing hidden blood pressure abnormalities, including high blood pressure during sleep. The study also found that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) was common in children with SCD.

Alarmingly, nearly 71 percent of the children showed signs of early cardiovascular or vascular injury, even with normal blood pressure during regular visits.

Early kidney complications were also prominent. Many children showed proteinuria, an early warning sign of kidney damage. Sensitive kidney tests using cystatin C detected reduced kidney function in a significant number of patients.

The Importance of Early Detection

Dr. Girish Chandra Bhatt emphasized the need for comprehensive care.

"These findings show that children with sickle cell disease require regular screening beyond routine blood tests. Early detection of hidden heart, kidney and sleep-related complications can help improve treatment and long-term outcomes,"

The research is particularly important for Madhya Pradesh, where sickle cell disease is prevalent, especially in tribal areas.

Better Screening and Treatment Strategies

Researchers believe this study will help doctors develop better screening and treatment strategies for children with SCD. Early detection can significantly reduce long-term complications associated with the disorder.

Regular screening is crucial for children with sickle cell disease to identify hidden complications early on.

What to Watch Next

Future research will focus on developing more effective screening protocols and treatment plans based on these findings. Further studies are needed to understand the long-term impact of early intervention on children with sickle cell disease.
