In a major leadership reshuffle at one of India’s biggest tech companies, Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal has resigned as Group CEO, ending an era that began long before the food-delivery boom transformed India’s startup landscape. The company announced that Blinkit CEO Albinder Dhindsa will now take charge as the new Group CEO, effective February 1.
Goyal, who founded the company (earlier known as Foodiebay) in 2008, said he will now shift his focus toward building new ideas and long-term innovation projects within the group.
What Zomato said
Zomato’s parent company Eternal confirmed the leadership transition in an official statement, adding that Goyal will move to the strategic position of Vice Chairman from February 1.
Dhindsa, who has been leading Blinkit since its acquisition, will now oversee Zomato, Blinkit, Hyperpure, and other group ventures under a unified vision.
Why this transition matters
1️⃣ A rare leadership shift in Indian tech
Deepinder Goyal has been one of the longest-serving startup CEOs in India. His decision to step aside marks a significant milestone for the company and India’s food-tech ecosystem.
2️⃣ Blinkit’s rising importance
Blinkit’s rapid growth in the quick-commerce segment—10-minute deliveries, aggressive expansion, and strong revenue push—has made it a central pillar of the Zomato group.
Dhindsa’s elevation signals Zomato’s future bet on quick-commerce as a long-term revenue driver.
3️⃣ Strategic reallocation of roles
While stepping down as Group CEO, Goyal is not exiting the company. Instead, he is expected to lead new innovations, incubations, and long-range initiatives—areas he has often described as his “core passion.”
Industry reaction
Startup and tech circles view the move as a “natural evolution” as Zomato matures from a food-delivery company to a broader consumer-tech conglomerate. Analysts say the leadership shift could help streamline decision-making and strengthen the group’s multi-brand automation strategy.
