San Francisco / Washington, January 15: Elon Musk’s AI company xAI announced stricter restrictions on its Grok chatbot, limiting its ability to edit or generate images of real people in revealing attire. The move comes after the AI produced sexualized depictions of women and minors, prompting scrutiny from California officials and regulators worldwide.

In a statement on X, xAI said it implemented technological measures to prevent the chatbot from producing images of individuals in bikinis or other revealing clothing, applying to all users, including paying subscribers. Additionally, xAI said it is blocking image generation based on user location in regions where such content is prohibited, though specific jurisdictions were not named.

Controversy escalates with California intervention

The restrictions follow widespread criticism after hyper-realistic images of women and minors in degrading poses surfaced online this month. Reports indicated that in some cases, minors were digitally manipulated into swimwear, sparking international concern over child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

California Attorney General Rob Bonta demanded immediate answers from xAI, emphasizing the need to stop the creation and spread of this content. Governor Gavin Newsom called for a swift investigation and accountability measures.

Musk has publicly stated he was unaware of any “naked underage images” generated by Grok, saying there were “literally zero” instances. Earlier, he had seemingly downplayed the controversy, responding with emojis to social media discussions about the images.

Global regulatory pressure

The California action adds to mounting international scrutiny. Lawmakers, advocacy groups, and regulators in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Indonesia have taken measures ranging from app store removal requests to temporary access blocks of Grok. Analysts warn that AI-generated sexual content could trigger legal, reputational, and operational risks for tech companies worldwide.

xAI has not responded directly to media inquiries about these developments. The company’s automated replies dismiss concerns as “Legacy Media Lies.”
