The World Health Organization (WHO) has strongly rejected recent claims by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggesting that scientific consensus on vaccine safety is not firmly evidence-based. In a detailed analysis released this week, the WHO reaffirmed that no causal link exists between childhood vaccines and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) — a position upheld by decades of scientific research.
The rebuttal comes after the CDC, under the Trump administration, reversed its long-standing guidance last month and asserted that existing studies “have not ruled out” the possibility of infant vaccines contributing to autism. The shift drew immediate global concern from public health experts, who warned that signalling uncertainty could erode trust in vaccination programmes worldwide.
WHO Analysis Reaffirms Long-Standing Consensus
In its statement, the WHO said the findings of its Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GACVS) — an independent expert body established in 1999 — leave “no doubt” regarding vaccine safety.
“Based on available evidence, no causal link exists between vaccines and autism spectrum disorders,” the WHO stated. “The conclusion reaffirms WHO’s position that childhood vaccines do not cause autism.”
GACVS reviewed 31 primary research studies published between January 2010 and August 2025, examining two key questions:

Whether thiomersal-containing vaccines contribute to ASD

Whether any vaccines, regardless of formulation, are associated with ASD
The committee said evidence from multiple countries consistently confirms a “strong safety profile” for vaccines administered during childhood and pregnancy.
Thiomersal and Aluminium Adjuvants: No Evidence of Harm
One of the issues revived by the CDC’s shift was thiomersal (or thimerosal), a preservative used in some vaccines. Anti-vaccine groups have long mischaracterised the compound as harmful despite extensive research disproving the claim.
The WHO said its new review “again finds no connection” between thiomersal and autism.
The committee also examined concerns surrounding aluminium-based adjuvants, which enhance immune responses. Reviewing global research conducted between 1999 and March 2023, including a large nationwide cohort analysis from Denmark covering births from 1997 to 2018, the WHO found:
“High-quality evidence shows no association between the trace amounts of aluminium used in some vaccines and ASD.”
It added that aluminium-containing vaccines “continue to meet rigorous safety standards.”
CDC Shift Raises Alarm Among Global Health Experts
The CDC’s revised language — claiming that studies “have not ruled out” a potential vaccine-autism link and that some research has been “ignored” — marks a departure from the scientific position held by the agency for decades.
While the CDC has not released new data to support its claims, the rhetorical shift has alarmed immunisation experts who fear the move may amplify misinformation ahead of the U.S. election cycle.
With the U.S. historically serving as a reference point for global public health standards, the WHO’s swift and firm response reflects concerns over broader international impact.
WHO Urges Governments to Rely on Evidence, Not Politics
Calling childhood immunisation “one of the greatest achievements in public health,” the WHO warned that weakening factual clarity around vaccines could jeopardise global progress.
The agency noted that over the past 50 years, vaccination has saved an estimated 154 million lives — the vast majority of them infants and young children — and dramatically reduced the burden of diseases such as measles, polio, and diphtheria.
“National authorities must base vaccine policies on the strongest scientific evidence,” the WHO said, urging governments to resist political or ideological pressures.
