WhatsApp Tests Username Reservation Feature on Android

WhatsApp is moving closer to introducing usernames to reduce unwanted messages. A new feature spotted in WhatsApp Beta for Android (v2.25.28.12) allows users to reserve their preferred usernames ahead of the full rollout.

Key Details:

• The option will appear under Profile → Username in WhatsApp settings.

• Users will be able to reserve usernames to prevent them from being taken before the feature is widely available.

• WhatsApp plans to include a username key, limiting who can contact you. Only those with your username and key can send messages, helping reduce unsolicited messages.

• Restrictions:

  • Usernames cannot start with ‘www’ to avoid impersonation of official websites.

  • Must include at least one letter.

  • Allowed characters: letters, numbers (0–9), periods (.), and underscores (_).

Currently, the feature is under development and is not yet available to beta testers. WhatsApp may expand testing to a wider audience in the coming weeks.
