Rain-Hit Guna Faces Severe Water Shortage Due to Road Construction

Guna city has been grappling with continuous heavy rainfall for the past three to four days. Amidst this, on Monday, residents faced a severe water crisis as not a single drop of water flowed from taps in almost all areas. This situation led to immense difficulties for people even to obtain drinking water.

The sudden water scarcity has completely disrupted daily life in the city. The primary cause behind these recurring water crises is reportedly the ongoing road construction work from Hanuman Chowk to the Ambuja Adani Cement Factory in Mavan, and the negligence of the concerned construction agency.

Road Construction Negligence Fuels Water Crisis

According to municipal sources, this is the fourth or fifth time in the last two months that the city's water supply has been disrupted due to road construction. Previous delays in pipeline shifting and recent incidents of JCB drivers damaging the main drinking water pipelines during construction have exacerbated the situation.

On Sunday evening, a JCB machine working on the road construction route to the Adani Cement Factory severely damaged the main water supply line. Repair work continued throughout the night and all day Monday, causing an outcry across the city. The Municipal President, Savitā Arvind Gupta, had to issue an alert about the disrupted water supply via social media.

Key Water Pipeline Damaged; No Alternative Arrangements

The damage to the main water supply line from the Sindh Project halted water flow from the water treatment plant to the city's reservoirs. The situation worsened as the Municipal Corporation failed to issue any prior notification about the supply disruption.

Furthermore, no alternative water supply arrangements were made through tankers to mitigate the citizens' problems. This oversight by the local administration and elected representatives, even during heavy monsoon, has caused deep anger among citizens, particularly housewives.

Residents are expressing extreme disappointment, stating they are struggling to access even basic necessities like drinking water. This precarious situation is leading to significant challenges in managing household budgets and daily routines.

Unreliable Water Supply Disrupts Daily Life and Household Budgets

The unpredictability in water supply timings has thrown daily life into disarray across the city. In major settlements like Nathukhedi, Premi Colony, and Bhargav Colony, the scheduled morning water supply of 8 AM is now fluctuating between 9 AM, 10 AM, and even as late as 11 AM.

This erratic timing is causing the most significant hardship for women, who are forced to choose between preparing children for school, cooking meals, or queuing for water. Working professionals are also facing considerable difficulties in reaching their offices and workplaces on time, severely impacting their daily schedules.

Questions Raised Over Municipal Performance; Demand for Fixed Timings

Concerns are being raised about the Municipal Corporation's operational efficiency regarding water distribution. Citizens allege that the corporation uses a WhatsApp group named 'City Supply' where pump operators allegedly shirk responsibility by posting last-minute messages.

Citizens are demanding that the Municipal Corporation establish fixed and reliable water supply timings, moving beyond mere formalities on WhatsApp groups, to allow residents to plan their daily activities. Additionally, citizens are calling for strict punitive action against the road construction agency of the Adani Cement Factory to prevent future occurrences and end the water crisis.
