Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s high-octane spy action thriller War 2 has found a second life on OTT, emerging as the most-watched film in India shortly after its digital debut on Netflix. The film, which underperformed in theatres following its August 14 release, started streaming on October 9 in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil, and quickly captured viewers’ attention.
According to a recent Ormax Media report, War 2 led OTT viewership in India for the week of October 6–12, registering over 3.5 million views. The Hindi version of Rajinikanth’s Coolie, which also premiered on digital platforms last week, trailed behind War 2, confirming the film’s digital dominance.
Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
War 2 features Kiara Advani in the female lead, with Anil Kapoor and Ashutosh Rana in pivotal roles. The film is directed by Ayan Mukerji, known for hits like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and produced by Aditya Chopra under the banner of Yash Raj Films. Chopra also contributed to the story, adding to the anticipation surrounding the film’s release.
The film centers on a thrilling rivalry between Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, two actors with massive fan followings. Despite heavy promotions and high expectations, the film struggled to meet box office projections, leaving many industry watchers disappointed.
OTT Success Signals Shift in Audience Viewing Habits
War 2’s strong performance on Netflix highlights the growing significance of digital platforms in reshaping a film’s commercial trajectory. Industry analysts suggest that high-budget spectacles with pan-Indian appeal, like War 2, can recover audience engagement and revenue through OTT, even when theatrical returns are muted.
“This is a clear example of how OTT can rescue big films that underperform in theatres. Streaming platforms allow a wider audience to catch up, particularly when films feature marquee stars and high-octane action,” said film trade analyst Rohan Mehta.
Looking Ahead
As War 2 continues to dominate OTT charts, it demonstrates the changing landscape of Indian cinema, where digital success can bolster a film’s visibility and impact. Fans can currently stream the movie exclusively on Netflix, enjoying the action-packed spectacle from the comfort of home.
