Tragedy Strikes Vrindavan Pilgrimage

A joyous religious gathering turned into a nightmare on Friday when a boat carrying devotees capsized in the Yamuna River in Vrindavan. The incident claimed the lives of at least 10 people, with several others still missing.

The devotees, numbering over 30, were from Ludhiana and had arrived in Vrindavan by bus. They were part of a pilgrimage organized by the Banke Bihari Club.

Vrindavan circle officer Peetam Pal Singh confirmed the details. 10 deaths have been confirmed, with 5 still missing. Many others were rescued.

Survivor Chetan, a shop owner from Jagraon, recounted the horrifying experience. "All of us were singing bhajans in the boat. We didn't see what we collided with but, all of a sudden, the boat capsized and we were drowning in the Yamuna. It was terrifying."

Rescue Efforts and Aftermath

Immediate rescue efforts were undertaken by divers on the banks, saving many lives. However, the survivors are struggling to cope with the trauma and the uncertainty surrounding the fate of their fellow pilgrims.

Some of the deceased have been identified. They include Charanjit alias Kala, Pinky, Ishan Kataria, and the trip organizers Kavita Behal and her son Madhur. Lovi Behal, Yashu Bajaj, Radha Arora, and Vijay Behal were among those rescued.

Government Response and Support

The Ludhiana administration has established 24x7 helplines to assist those affected. The numbers are 01624223226 (SDM Jagraon) and 01612403100 (deputy commissioner, Ludhiana).

Special teams of civil and police officers have been dispatched to Vrindavan to coordinate with local authorities.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his condolences.

"I spoke with Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Ji regarding the Mathura boat accident. Every possible assistance will be provided to the victims."

He also stated that his government is in constant contact with the Uttar Pradesh government.

 

Banke Bihari Club and the Annual Pilgrimage

The ill-fated trip was organized by the Banke Bihari Club for the fourth consecutive year. The group consisted of residents from Ludhiana and Jagraon. They left on Thursday evening and arrived in Vrindavan on Friday morning.

The group travelled to Keshi Ghat on the banks of the Yamuna in two boats. One of these boats allegedly collided with a floating pontoon, leading to the tragic capsizing.
