As India gears up for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, Virat Kohli’s recent social media post has put speculation about his limited-overs future to rest. Sources say the cryptic message was a response to widespread chatter surrounding whether the former Test and T20I skipper will continue to play ODIs and be ready for the 2027 World Cup.
Kohli Sends a Clear Message
“The only time you truly fail, is when you decide to give up,” Kohli wrote on X (formerly Twitter), signaling his intent to continue contributing in the 50-over format.
The post comes after months of discussion among fans, former players, and cricket analysts about whether Kohli’s ODI career would be winding down, especially given that he now focuses solely on one format for India. Questions also arose on whether the upcoming Australia tour could be his final assignment Down Under.
Selectors Back Kohli and Rohit for the Long Term
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar dismissed rumours about Kohli’s and Rohit Sharma’s retirement after the Australia series. He confirmed both players have cleared all fitness assessments and have been selected with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
“Not as far as I know. I think they have both done their fitness tests or the fitness norms that have been suggested. As far as I know and the selectors know, they have gone through the required norms,” Agarkar said.
He added that the current format focus and recent captaincy changes were not reasons to speculate on retirement. “That's the format they (Virat and Rohit) are playing at the moment. We picked them as far as the 2027 World Cup is concerned,” he noted.
Coach Gambhir Emphasises Staying in the Present
Following India’s 2-0 ODI series sweep over the West Indies, head coach Gautam Gambhir highlighted the importance of focusing on the present rather than long-term speculation.
“The 50-over World Cup is still two and a half years away. It is very important to stay in the present. Their experience will be valuable in Australia. Hopefully, those two guys will have a successful tour,” Gambhir said.
