Jantar Mantar Protest Turns Violent

A protest held at the Jantar Mantar in the national capital, New Delhi, on Wednesday night escalated into violence following a fierce clash between protestors and the police. Demonstrators, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and protesting alleged irregularities in the examination system, attempted to march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament.

When stopped by security forces, the protestors reportedly tried to break through barricades, escalating tensions and leading to alleged stone-pelting. It is reported that over 118 police personnel, along with several protestors, sustained injuries in the confrontation. The police were compelled to resort to a lathi-charge to bring the situation under control. Security has been intensified at Jantar Mantar and surrounding sensitive areas, with additional police forces deployed.

Attempts to Breach Barricades

According to eyewitnesses, protestors attempted to move forward by dismantling barricades. When the police intervened to halt their advance, arguments ensued, which subsequently devolved into a physical altercation. The police allege that some protestors hurled stones at security personnel, injuring several officers. In response, the police used force, including a lathi-charge, to regain control.

Multiple FIRs Registered, Investigation Underway

In connection with the incident, the police have registered multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) under charges including violence, obstructing public servants in discharge of public functions, vandalism, and causing damage to public property. The police are currently analyzing CCTV footage and video recordings from the scene to identify those involved in the rioting.

Changes in Security Protocol

In light of the Jantar Mantar incident, the Delhi Police have implemented a new protocol for security personnel deployed at protest sites. Security personnel are now mandated to perform their duties in uniform, rather than in plain clothes. Police officials believe this measure will enhance transparency in security arrangements and aid in identification.

The incident has also intensified the political atmosphere in the capital. Protestors remain firm on their demands and have indicated their intention to continue the movement, while the administration has signaled its intent to take strict measures to maintain law and order.
