Vande Bharat sleeper train ready for launch with upgraded night-travel comfort, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday unveiled the features of India’s new-generation Vande Bharat sleeper train, describing it as a major upgrade for long-distance overnight rail travel. The minister walked through the coaches at New Delhi Railway Station, highlighting design changes aimed at comfort, safety and accessibility.

The 16-coach trainset is expected to be launched very soon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Kolkata–Guwahati route, marking the first sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat platform.

What’s new inside the sleeper coaches

According to the minister, the sleeper version has been designed after extensive passenger feedback. Key additions include spacious tray holders, adjustable window shades, reading lights, coat hangers, magazine holders, and deep wash basins designed to prevent water splashing.

Berths have been ergonomically redesigned with improved cushioning to enhance comfort during overnight journeys.

For passengers with visual impairment, seat numbers and labels are marked in Braille, a feature officials say will improve independent navigation inside the train.

Safety, ride comfort and sanitation upgrades

The Vande Bharat sleeper comes equipped with automatic doors and vestibules, enabling smoother movement between coaches. Officials said the train offers enhanced ride comfort through better suspension systems and significant noise reduction.

Key safety systems include the <u>automatic train protection system Kavach</u> and an <u>emergency talk-back communication system</u> for passengers. Advanced disinfectant technology has also been integrated to maintain high sanitation standards during long journeys.

Tested and certified before launch

Railway officials confirmed that the train has completed its final high-speed trials under the supervision of the Commissioner of Railway Safety. These trials included evaluations of ride stability, vibration behaviour, braking and emergency braking performance, and other critical safety parameters.

Following these trials, the minister announced that the service was cleared for commercial launch on the eastern corridor.

Route, rake movement and rollout plan

Officials said one trainset will be positioned in Guwahati and another in Kolkata ahead of the formal flag-off ceremony. The Kolkata–Guwahati route was chosen to address demand for faster and more comfortable overnight connectivity between eastern and northeastern India.

Fare structure and capacity details

The sleeper Vande Bharat is positioned as a premium yet accessible option. Indicative fares, including meals, are expected to be around Rs 2,300 for 3 AC, Rs 3,000 for 2 AC, and Rs 3,600 for 1 AC, according to earlier statements by the minister.

The train comprises 11 coaches of 3 AC, four coaches of 2 AC, and one coach of 1 AC. Out of 823 total berths, 611 are in 3 AC, 188 in 2 AC, and 24 in 1 AC.
