US Ambassador's Kashmir Remarks Spark Outcry in Pakistan, Diplomat Summoned
The Cliff News | Islamabad | August 20, 2026. A statement by US Ambassador Sergio Gunter referring to Jammu and Kashmir as an 'important part' of India has elicited a sharp reaction in Pakistan.
In response, Pakistan summoned the US Chargé d'Affaires in Islamabad to lodge a strong protest. Pakistan has outright rejected Gunter's statement, calling it irresponsible and factually incorrect.
Meeting with Chief Minister and Emphasis on Tourism
Sergio Gunter made these remarks to the media following his meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar during his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir. He also praised the region's natural beauty and highlighted the need to bring its tourism potential to a global platform.
Gunter also noted an improvement in the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that steps have been taken by the central and state administrations to strengthen security arrangements. He also indicated that the US might consider reviewing its ongoing travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir.
Pakistan Summons US Diplomat
Within hours of the US Ambassador's statement, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry summoned Natalie Baker, the US Chargé d'Affaires in Islamabad. Pakistan formally conveyed its protest over the ambassador's remarks.
The Foreign Ministry termed the comment describing Jammu and Kashmir as part of India as "factually incorrect." Pakistan maintains that it considers Jammu and Kashmir a disputed territory and does not accept Gunter's statement. Presenting its stance to the US diplomat, Pakistan stated that the final status of Jammu and Kashmir should be determined in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Statement Deviates from US's Old Stance
In its protest, Pakistan also stated that Sergio Gunter's remarks were not in line with America's long-standing position on the Kashmir issue. Islamabad deemed the statement irresponsible and expects the US administration to clarify its position on the matter.
This statement comes at a time when strategic relations between India and the US are continuously strengthening, and international discussions regarding security and tourism in Jammu and Kashmir are increasing. The meeting between the US Ambassador and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during the visit was also quite significant. Both held in-depth discussions on various topics related to the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir, India-US relations, and development in the region.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had already clarified that issues related to Jammu and Kashmir should be resolved through India's internal political and administrative processes. In this context, the US Ambassador's visit and his remarks are considered significant from a diplomatic perspective. Gunter, while praising the natural beauty of Jammu and Kashmir, mentioned that American tourists might also be interested in visiting the region. He also pointed towards the existing tourism and other opportunities in the region.
The US's current travel advisory includes a security warning for Jammu and Kashmir, which Gunter described as reviewable in light of the improved security situation in the region.
Increase in Diplomatic Heat
Following Sergio Gunter's statement, the issue of Jammu and Kashmir has once again come to the forefront of diplomatic discussions between India and Pakistan. India has long maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of its territory, while Pakistan declares the region a disputed territory and raises it on international forums.
In this perspective, the US Ambassador referring to Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India is considered a significant diplomatic setback for Pakistan. Pakistan's summoning of the US diplomat indicates that political and diplomatic rhetoric between the two countries regarding this issue may intensify further.
