In a shocking case of greed and betrayal, Uttar Pradesh Police on Thursday arrested a 47-year-old widow, her alleged lover, and his brother for the murder of her 22-year-old son to claim insurance worth ₹40 lakh.
According to police, Mamta Devi conspired with Mayank Katiyar (33) and Rishi Katiyar (28) to kill her son Pradeep Sharma in Angadpur village on the night of October 26–27.
Pradeep, who worked in Andhra Pradesh, had returned home for Diwali celebrations when he fell victim to the plot. Superintendent of Police Shraddha Narendra Pandey said the accused murdered Pradeep to encash four life insurance policies taken in his name.
“Mamta and Mayank planned the murder to claim the insurance money,” SP Pandey said.
Police said the Katiyar brothers lured Pradeep out for dinner, then attacked him with a hammer on a deserted stretch before dumping his body on the highway to make it look like a road accident.
All three accused have been arrested, and further investigation is underway.
