Uttar Pradesh: From the 2026 academic session, students entering Classes 9 and 11 in Uttar Pradesh will be required to take at least one vocational subject alongside their standard academic curriculum. The decision, announced by the UP Board, aims to bridge the gap between education and employment by offering practical, industry-aligned skills early in a student’s academic journey.

Focus on hands-on, job-oriented training

UP Board Secretary Bhagwati Singh said the new curriculum covers fields such as information technology, electronics, apparel, and beauty and wellness. Courses have been developed under the guidance of Additional Secretary Satyendra Kumar Singh and Skand Shukla, with input from subject experts to ensure content is practical and workplace-ready.

The curricula will emphasize technical skills, real-world applications, and practical training, moving beyond purely theoretical learning. Officials believe this will allow students to explore career options early and develop skills relevant to higher education or immediate employment.

Aligned with National Education Policy goals

The initiative reflects the National Education Policy’s emphasis on skill development and vocational learning. The Central Institute of Vocational Education, Bhopal, supported the UP Board in course development, ensuring that students gain exposure to emerging sectors and hands-on training. Additional vocational trades are expected to be added in the coming months.

Officials highlighted that the reform will help students become self-reliant and better prepared for future challenges, whether they choose to continue studies or enter the workforce directly after school.
