The University Grants Commission (UGC) has constituted a five-member fact-finding committee to investigate the death of a college student in Dharamshala, following allegations of ragging by fellow students and sexual harassment by a professor.

The decision comes amid growing concern over campus safety and accountability in higher education institutions, particularly when complaints involve both peer harassment and alleged faculty misconduct.

What triggered the UGC probe

According to official information, the student had reportedly flagged instances of ragging involving three students, along with allegations of sexual harassment against a faculty member, prior to the death. The seriousness of the complaints prompted the UGC to step in and initiate an independent inquiry.

The commission has said the panel will examine whether institutional mechanisms failed to respond adequately to the student’s grievances.
