Two Terrorists Neutralised in Kupwara

The Indian Army on Monday evening killed two terrorists during a joint anti-infiltration operation with the Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) in the Machhal sector of Kupwara district.

According to an official statement, the operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs provided by the J&K Police and corroborated by multiple intelligence agencies about a likely infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC).

“Alert troops observed suspicious movement and issued a challenge, prompting the terrorists to open indiscriminate fire. The troops responded with effective fire, neutralising two terrorists,” the Army said.

A large cache of weapons and equipment was recovered from the site, and search operations are continuing across the region to ensure no other infiltrators remain in the vicinity.

Security officials said the infiltration attempt reflects a renewed push by terror groups operating across the LoC to infiltrate before snowfall closes mountain passes for the winter.
The Machhal sector, which lies close to Kupwara’s rugged northern frontier, has witnessed frequent infiltration bids in recent years, as militants try to exploit fog, darkness, and adverse weather conditions.

Officials said the operation highlights the continued coordination between the Indian Army and local police, whose ground intelligence has been crucial in intercepting militants early.

Amit Shah Reviews Security, Calls for Vigilance

In Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level security review meeting to assess the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. He directed all border forces to maintain “maximum vigilance” and ensure that terror outfits do not exploit the winter season to push infiltrators across the LoC or the International Border.

The meeting was attended by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, J&K Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, DGP R.R. Swain, and senior officers from CAPFs and intelligence agencies.

A senior official familiar with the meeting said Shah emphasised tightening surveillance along vulnerable infiltration routes, particularly in Kupwara, Poonch, and Rajouri sectors. He also reviewed ongoing counterterrorism operations and the progress of development projects aimed at strengthening local security and governance.

Security analysts note that infiltration attempts often surge during the transitional months before winter, as snow later blocks most mountain passes along the LoC. The latest operation in Kupwara is the third such encounter in October, underscoring the persistent threat of Pakistan-based terror groups trying to breach Indian defences.

A defence official said, “Every year, as the snowline moves downward, there is a rush to infiltrate. This year too, we are witnessing increased activity along the LoC.”
