Two Arrested in Extortion and Incitement Case in Bareilly

Police in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh have arrested two individuals on serious charges of demanding extortion money and inciting a woman to attempt self-immolation. According to the police, the arrested accused had demanded fifty thousand rupees from the woman's in-laws, threatening to kill her if the money was not paid.

The accusations also include that they instigated the woman to self-immolate by pouring flammable liquid on herself within the police station premises. The incident came to light on September 24, 2026, when a woman attempted self-immolation by pouring flammable liquid on herself in the police office area of Bareilly. Alert police personnel present at the scene intervened promptly, rescued the woman, and immediately transported her to the hospital. After medical examination, the woman was discharged.

Family Dispute and Extortion Allegations Surface

Following the incident, the Kotwali police station initiated a detailed investigation. The investigation revealed a long-standing family dispute and ongoing court cases between the woman and her in-laws. According to the complaint filed with the police, the complainant, Abdul Qayyum, stated that on September 23, he was in Rampur Garden with his wife.

During this time, two individuals, identified as Shoaib and Amal Saini, stopped them. The accused allegedly showed Qayyum a video of his daughter-in-law, Shabana, wherein she was threatening self-immolation. The accused claimed that if a sum of fifty thousand rupees was paid, the woman would act as they dictated, and the dispute would be resolved. The complainant alleged that when he refused to pay the amount, he was threatened with death.

Based on this complaint, a case (Crime No. 466/2026) was registered at the Kotwali police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, naming Shoaib and Amal Saini as accused.

Arrests Made Based on Informant's Tip

On the evening of September 24, acting on precise information provided by an informant, the police successfully arrested both accused from the Baradari police station area. The arrested individuals were identified as Shoaib, a resident of Sanoua, and Amal Saini, a resident of Pargawan.

During initial police interrogation, the accused admitted to being aware of the ongoing family dispute between Shabana Khan and her husband. They intended to exploit this situation to extort money from the complainant and, through this, also exert pressure on the police department. A press note issued by the police stated that the accused had systematically incited the woman to take drastic measures like self-immolation.

Accused Amal Saini Has Previous Criminal Record

During the investigation, it also came to light that the accused Amal Saini has a prior criminal history. He had previously been implicated in three separate cases registered in 2019, 2020, and 2026, involving assault, extortion, and threats, with charge sheets filed in court for these cases.

The police recovered three mobile phones, twenty-two hundred rupees in cash, a bottle filled with diesel, an empty bottle, and a scooter from the possession of the accused, which are relevant to the investigation. Both arrested accused are being presented before the court.
