Trump warns of higher tariffs on India over Russian oil ties, names PM Modi

US President Donald Trump issued a fresh warning on tariffs, linking trade penalties to India’s purchases of Russian oil.

Trump publicly mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “good guy” while signalling dissatisfaction.

Indian exporters and policymakers are directly affected, as tariff hikes could raise costs and disrupt trade flows.

US President Donald Trump on Monday signalled that India could face higher US tariffs if it does not cooperate with Washington on what he described as the “Russian oil issue”. The remarks have added a new layer of uncertainty to India–US trade relations, particularly for exporters dependent on the American market.

Trump links tariffs to Russian oil trade

Speaking publicly, Trump said the United States may raise existing tariffs on Indian imports if New Delhi continues its current approach towards buying oil from Russia. While he did not specify a timeline or tariff rate, the warning was framed as part of Washington’s broader effort to pressure countries maintaining energy trade with Moscow.

Trump underlined that trade measures remain a key lever for the US, making it clear that economic consequences are on the table if concerns are not addressed.

Modi mentioned, message still firm

During his remarks, Trump named Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing him as a “good guy”. At the same time, he added that Modi was aware of the US President’s displeasure, signalling that the issue has been raised at senior political levels.

The tone combined personal familiarity with a clear policy message, indicating that diplomatic goodwill may not shield India from trade action.
