Trump Sparks Diplomatic Row with Denmark by Appointing Special Envoy to Greenland

US President Donald Trump has ignited tensions with Denmark after naming Jeff Landry, Republican governor of Louisiana, as a special envoy to Greenland, the Arctic island he has previously expressed interest in acquiring for the United States.

Trump defended the appointment, citing Greenland’s strategic location and national security importance. “We need Greenland for national protection,” he told the BBC. “We have to have it… Landry will lead the charge as special envoy.” He emphasized that the move was motivated by security concerns rather than mineral resources, specifically pointing to Chinese and Russian naval activity in the surrounding waters.

The announcement drew immediate backlash from Copenhagen. Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen described the appointment as “deeply upsetting” and warned Washington to respect Danish sovereignty. “As long as we have a kingdom consisting of Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, we cannot accept actions that undermine our territorial integrity,” he said. The Danish government plans to summon the US ambassador for an explanation.

Greenland’s Response

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, reaffirmed the island’s autonomy. “The appointment of a special envoy does not change anything for us. We decide our own future. Greenland belongs to Greenlanders, and territorial integrity must be respected,” he said. While Greenland has extensive self-rule since 1979, defense and foreign policy remain under Danish control. Polls indicate that most Greenlanders support eventual independence from Denmark but overwhelmingly oppose becoming part of the US.

Gov Landry, meanwhile, expressed enthusiasm for the role, tweeting that it was an “honour to serve in a volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US.”

International Reactions

The controversy has attracted attention beyond Denmark. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted her support, stating that the EU stands in “full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.”

Trump’s renewed focus on Greenland comes after his return to the White House in January, reviving a long-standing interest in the island’s strategic position and mineral wealth. He has not ruled out using force to secure US control, a stance that has alarmed both Denmark and NATO allies.

The unfolding diplomatic dispute highlights the sensitivity surrounding Greenland’s strategic and geopolitical significance in the Arctic region, as well as the limits of US ambitions in territories with established sovereignty.
