Trump-Held Summit Sees Landmark Gaza Ceasefire as Hostages Released

Historic Ceasefire Brokered in Gaza

U.S. President Donald Trump described Monday as a “tremendous day for the Middle East” following the signing of a Gaza ceasefire declaration at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. The summit brought together over two dozen world leaders, including representatives from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, who acted as guarantors for the agreement.

“This is a great day. This is a new beginning,” Trump said upon arriving in Israel earlier, before the summit. When asked whether the two-year Gaza war was officially over, he replied simply: “Yes.”

Hostages Freed, Prisoners Exchanged

In a key component of the deal, Hamas released the last 20 surviving hostages it had held for more than two years. In return, Israel freed 1,968 prisoners, most of them Palestinian detainees, including roughly 250 security prisoners convicted of violent crimes and about 1,700 captured during the recent conflict.

The ceasefire also requires Hamas to return the bodies of 27 hostages who died or were killed in captivity, along with the remains of an Israeli soldier killed in 2014. Israeli officials have cautioned that not all remains were expected to be returned immediately.

The initial hostages were seized during Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which left 1,219 dead, predominantly civilians. Families of the remaining captives endured years of uncertainty and anguish until the latest exchange.

During the summit, Trump praised Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi for playing a critical role in negotiations. “President Sisi has been very instrumental in talks with Hamas,” Trump said, highlighting Egypt’s mediation efforts. El-Sisi, in turn, hailed Trump as “the only one capable of bringing peace to our region.”

While representatives of Israel and Hamas did not attend, Trump briefly met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss future steps.
