Trump Claims Tariffs Helped End India-Pakistan Conflict, Seeks Spotlight on Global Peace Efforts

Trump Credits Tariffs for India-Pakistan Truce

US President Donald Trump claimed that his threat of steep tariffs on both India and Pakistan was instrumental in halting military escalation during the conflict earlier this year. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to a Middle East summit on the Israel-Hamas ceasefire, Trump stated:

"I settled a few of the wars just based on tariffs. For example, between India and Pakistan. I said, if you guys want to fight a war and you have nuclear weapons, I am going to put big tariffs on you both, like 100%, 150%, and 200%."

He further claimed that the conflict was resolved within 24 hours due to his intervention, asserting that without such measures, the war might have continued.

India Rejects US Mediation Claims

Indian officials have repeatedly rejected the United States’ claim of playing a role in Operation Sindoor or the resulting ceasefire. New Delhi maintains that the truce, announced in May 2025, was achieved through direct dialogue between the military leadership of both countries, without third-party intervention.

Trump Highlights Global Conflict Resolution Track Record

Trump framed the Gaza ceasefire as the eighth conflict he has “solved” and indicated his attention may next turn to tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He emphasized his purported ability to settle long-running wars rapidly:

"Think about some of the wars that were going on for years… I got every one of those done, for the most part, within a day. It's pretty good… It's an honour to do it. I saved millions of lives," he said.

He also promoted himself for next year’s Nobel Peace Prize, citing his claimed track record of ending conflicts spanning decades.
