According to senior official Sanjay Agarwal, the passenger train rammed into the freight train from behind, with one coach landing atop a cargo wagon. Rescue teams used iron cutters to recover bodies trapped inside the wreckage.
Among the dead was the locomotive driver, while the female co-pilot sustained critical injuries and is undergoing treatment.
Indian Railways has launched an inquiry into the cause of the crash and announced compensation for victimsβ families. Train movement through the affected section resumed early Wednesday.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed condolences to the bereaved families.
Indiaβs vast rail network carries over 12 million passengers daily, but safety issues persist. The country still recalls the 2023 Odisha rail tragedy, which claimed over 280 lives β one of the worst in Indian history.
