While torrential rains across various parts of the country have brought pleasant weather, they have also heightened concerns over soaring vegetable prices for the common man. Continuous rainfall has led to a significant drop in vegetable supply to markets, causing prices of onions, tomatoes, and other green vegetables to skyrocket. In many cities, onion prices have reached ₹50 to ₹80 per kilogram, a considerable blow to consumers.

Official sources indicate that the supply of onions in the country's major markets has decreased by approximately 30-40%. Alongside this, tomato prices have risen to ₹40-60 per kilogram, cauliflower to ₹80-120 per kilogram, and seasonal vegetables like peas have reached around ₹160 per kilogram. Prices for vegetables such as capsicum, beans, and okra are also fluctuating between ₹60 and ₹120 per kilogram. This surge is directly impacting household budgets, especially increasing kitchen expenses for middle-class families.

Rain Disrupts Vegetable Supply Chain

The rains have severely affected the supply chain, disrupting the flow of vegetables directly from farms to markets in many key production areas. Waterlogged roads and damaged transportation systems in several regions are causing immense difficulties for farmers and traders in getting their produce to markets on time. Furthermore, excessive moisture in the fields is impacting crop quality, increasing the risk of vegetables spoiling quickly.

The sharp increase in onion prices is a particular cause for concern. With reduced market supply and sustained demand, retail prices are under continuous pressure. A significant rise in onion prices has been recorded in just the last few days. According to the weather department, if the current spell of rain continues, further price fluctuations may be observed in the coming days, potentially worsening the situation.

Tomatoes and Other Greens Also Become Costlier

Beyond onions, the impact of the rains is clearly visible on other vegetables. A reduction in tomato supply has also led to an increase in its prices. Similarly, seasonal vegetables like cauliflower and peas are experiencing an unexpected price surge. The cost of vegetables such as okra, beans, and capsicum also remains significantly higher than usual.

This overall price increase is pushing many favorite vegetables off the plates of common consumers. The current situation necessitates a focus on ensuring regular supply and adequate availability of onions in the market, a critical challenge that the government and relevant agencies are closely monitoring.

'Kanda Express' Initiative to Boost Onion Supply

With the objective of controlling rising onion prices and providing relief to consumers, the government has intervened actively. The Ministry of Agriculture and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) have jointly initiated the release of onions from buffer stocks into the market. Alongside this, special 'Kanda Express' (Onion Express) trains have been deployed to ensure smooth supply from the major onion producing region of Nashik to key consumption markets across the country.

The primary aim of this initiative is to ensure the immediate availability of onions in cities and regions where prices have seen extreme surges due to rain and supply-related issues. The government's intervention is expected to increase the additional availability of onions in the market. If market arrivals normalize and transportation systems function smoothly, onion prices may see reduced pressure and stabilize at controlled levels in the near future.

Market Dynamics Dependent on Weather, Future Uncertain

In the current scenario, the price fluctuations in the vegetable market are largely dependent on the future weather patterns. Continuous rain is not only affecting standing crops but also delaying the delivery of produce to markets. Furthermore, increased spoilage of perishable vegetables due to high moisture content could further reduce the overall supply in the market, pushing prices even higher.

In the coming days, if the intensity of rainfall decreases and the weather normalizes, leading to increased arrivals of vegetables in the markets, there is a strong possibility of relief in the prices of onions and other vegetables. Conversely, if the rainy spell prolongs, the current price surge may persist or even increase.
