Torrential Rains Devastate Ripe Paddy Crop in Bareilly, Causing Heavy Losses to Farmers

Torrential rains and strong winds that began on Friday evening in the rural areas of Bareilly district have washed away the hard work of farmers. The ripe paddy crop has fallen in the fields, leading to significant financial losses. The gusts of strong winds have directly exposed the ripe paddy ears to water.

A severe risk of grain spoilage and a decline in crop quality has emerged due to waterlogging in the fields. Water is visible across the fields, increasing the anxiety of farmers. The ready paddy crop has been laid low in the fields due to this aerial calamity. The combination of strong winds and rain has destroyed years of farmers' hard work in an instant.

The paddy ears are now submerged in the water-filled fields, increasing the risk of grain rotting and sprouting. This situation is being observed in several rural areas of Bareilly, where farmers appear helpless to save their crops. Waterlogging is also expected to negatively impact the quality of the paddy, reducing farmers' hopes of receiving fair market prices.

Vegetable Crops Also Ravaged

Harish Rajput, a resident of Labhera Durga Prasad village in Meergunj tehsil, reported that in addition to paddy and sugarcane, chili and other leafy vegetables have also suffered heavy damage. Recently sown crops of spinach, fenugreek, and radish have succumbed to the rains.

Furthermore, ready seedlings of cauliflower, cabbage, and tomato have been completely ruined by waterlogging. Farmers had procured expensive seeds to grow these tomato seedlings, which are now destroyed. Similarly, other vegetable growers are in deep distress.

Tomato farmers, in particular, have suffered a major blow, with their nurseries now completely submerged and destroyed. Farmers had invested significant time and resources in preparing these young plants. Other seasonal vegetable crops like cauliflower and cabbage have also fallen victim to water accumulation, which will affect both their quality and market value.

Farmers Demand Compensation

Several farmers, including Om Prakash Maurya, Hori Lal, Munish Rajput, Raj Kumar Rajput, Rajendra Singh, Ram Bahadur, Ram Swaroop, Som Pal, Bijendra Pal Kashyap, and Pyare Diwakar, have been affected by this natural disaster. All these farmers are extremely concerned as their crops are submerged in water.

Local farmers state that if the water is not drained from the fields soon, the remaining crop will also rot. Affected farmers have appealed to the administration to assess the damage and provide appropriate compensation.

The farmers stated that this unseasonal rain has brought a double blow. On one hand, the ripe paddy crop has been destroyed, and on the other hand, the nurseries and ready crops of seasonal vegetables have also been ruined. This is their primary source of livelihood, and compensating for this loss presents a significant challenge.

Affected farmers have appealed to the government for an immediate relief package and fair compensation for the losses incurred, so they can prepare for the next crop and continue to support their families.
