‘The Conjuring’ Prequel in Development at Warner Bros., Will Explore Early Days of Ed and Lorraine Warren

Just when fans believed The Conjuring franchise had reached its chilling conclusion, it appears more supernatural horrors are on the way.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. and New Line are developing a prequel to the hit Conjuring series, focusing on the early years of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren — rather than another of their famous haunting cases.

Talks are reportedly underway with Rodrigue Huart, a short film director, to helm the project.

Screenwriters Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote The Nun II (2023) and The Conjuring: Last Rites, have been brought on board to write the screenplay, though a final decision on the creative team is still pending.

The update arrives shortly after The Conjuring: Last Rites — previously thought to be the final installment in the franchise — became a major box-office success, earning USD 487 million globally. Its impressive run reportedly encouraged Warner Bros. to revisit the Warrens’ story from the very beginning.

It remains uncertain whether Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who have played Lorraine and Ed Warren since the original 2013 film, will reprise their roles in the prequel.

Meanwhile, The Conjuring universe is also expanding to the small screen, with HBO developing a TV series that will continue the story from the films. Writer and producer Nancy Won has been hired as the showrunner for the project, with plot details still under wraps.

Across nine films — including The Nun and Annabelle spin-offs — The Conjuring franchise has become the highest-grossing horror series in history, amassing over USD 2.7 billion worldwide. The universe was created by James Wan, with Peter Safran serving as producer on every installment.
