Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins has torn his ACL during joint practice with the Raiders, likely ending his 2026 season. This setback opens opportunities for other wideouts on the roster.

The Houston Texans have been dealt a significant blow with wide receiver Jayden Higgins suffering a torn ACL during Tuesday’s joint practice session with the Las Vegas Raiders. The injury, confirmed by NFL insider Jonathan M. Alexander, is expected to sideline the 23-year-old for the entirety of the 2026 season.
Higgins sustained the injury while running a route in the red zone. He was seen landing awkwardly and initially had difficulty getting to his feet but was ultimately able to leave the field under his own power. Head coach DeMeco Ryans stated the team was still assessing the full extent of the injury following the practice.
Depth Chart Impact
Higgins's absence leaves a considerable void in the Texans' receiving corps. As the team's No. 3 wide receiver on the current depth chart, his loss is expected to create expanded roles for several other players. Analysts are pointing to Tank Dell and Xavier Hutchinson as beneficiaries of this development.
Xavier Hutchinson, who enters the 2026 season after a career-best performance in 2025 with 35 catches for 428 yards and three touchdowns, is now positioned for the most significant playing time of his young NFL career. The injury to Higgins directly elevates Hutchinson's potential role in the Texans' offensive scheme.
Tank Dell's Potential Resurgence
The injury also presents a renewed opportunity for Tank Dell, a receiver once considered a promising young talent and potential fantasy football standout. Dell's progress has been hampered by a series of injuries, including a serious knee injury in Week 16 of the 2024 season that involved tears to his MCL, ACL, and LCL, forcing him to miss the entire 2025 season.
This extended absence had pushed Dell down the team's wide receiver pecking order. However, before his injury troubles, Dell had established himself as a preferred target for quarterback C.J. Stroud during Stroud’s standout rookie campaign in 2023. In that season, Dell recorded 47 receptions for 709 yards and seven touchdowns in 11 games.
Rookie Jaylin Noel's Opportunity
Another player who could see an increased role is rookie Jaylin Noel. Despite dealing with his own injury concerns, including a finger injury and hamstring tightness that limited his training camp participation, Noel has the potential to contribute significantly. The 2025 third-round selection out of Iowa State possesses the versatility to play both in the slot and on the outside, offering another option to mitigate Higgins's loss.
Higgins, a 2025 second-round pick, was in the midst of preparations for the upcoming season when the unfortunate incident occurred during high-intensity red-zone drills. The team will now focus on integrating and developing its remaining receiving talent to compensate for Higgins’s season-ending injury.
