🔆 Tata Power expands into solar wafer & ingot manufacturing
Tata Power CEO Praveer Sinha announced on Tuesday that the company will establish India’s largest 10-gigawatt (GW) solar ingots and wafers plant, marking its entry into the foundational stage of solar manufacturing. The new facility will make the base materials used to produce solar cells — completing Tata Power’s integrated presence across the solar value chain.
Currently, Tata Power already operates 4.9 GW of integrated solar cell and module manufacturing capacity, and the addition of ingot and wafer manufacturing will make it one of the few Indian companies with a fully backward-integrated setup.
⚙️ Strategic move amid industry shift
Sinha noted that many Indian firms are moving toward producing wafers and ingots, rather than focusing solely on modules, as higher U.S. tariffs on Indian solar exports have reduced profitability for overseas shipments.
“We find that there’s already adequate capacity of modules and many cell plants are under construction in India,” Sinha said during the post-earnings call.
At present, Adani Group is the only major Indian player producing ingots and wafers at scale — with 2 GW capacity annually — making Tata Power’s 10 GW plant a massive scale-up in domestic production.
🇮🇳 Aligned with India’s renewable manufacturing mission
The initiative supports the Government of India’s goal to boost local solar manufacturing and reduce dependence on Chinese imports by the end of the decade. The government has already introduced Production-Linked Incentives (PLI) and is considering output-based financial support specifically for ingot and wafer production.
Tata Power plans to leverage central and state-level financial incentives for this new project.
“We are exploring the use of federal and state financial support for the new factory,” Sinha said, adding that a final investment decision will be made in the next two months.
☢️ Tata Power’s nuclear ambitions
In a separate statement, Sinha revealed that Tata Power is also evaluating entry into nuclear power generation, a new vertical for the company.
India currently has just over 8 GW of operational nuclear capacity, but aims to ramp this up to 100 GW by 2047, as part of its long-term low-carbon energy plan.
Tata Power’s move aligns with India’s broader energy transition goals, positioning the company as a multi-source clean energy major — spanning solar, wind, hydro, and soon nuclear.
