Born on January 23, 1963, in Punjab, Taranjit Singh Sandhu comes from a family with strong ties to Sikh religious and academic history.
His grandfather was Teja Singh Samundri, a freedom fighter and founder of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandhak Committee (SGPC).
His father, Bishan Singh Samundri, was the founding Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, and his mother, Jagjit Kaur Sandhu, was the principal of the Government College for Women in Amritsar.

Mr. Sandhu studied at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, before earning a Bachelor’s in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.
He also holds a Master’s in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Sandhu joined the Indian Foreign Service (I.F.S.) in 1988, accumulating over 35 years of experience.

His career began in the Soviet Union (1990-1992). Following its breakup, he helped establish the Indian Embassy in Ukraine (1992-1994).
