T20 World Cup 2026: Australia suffer fresh injury setback as Josh Hazlewood ruled out ahead of tournament
  • What happened: Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2026 after failing to recover from hamstring and Achilles injuries.

  • Why it matters now: Australia lose another senior pacer just days before the tournament begins in India and Sri Lanka, adding pressure on an already struggling squad.

  • What changes for people: Team combinations and bowling strategies may shift, with selectors considering backup options during the event.

  • Who is affected: The Australian cricket team, Group B rivals and fans following the upcoming World Cup campaign.

Australia’s preparations for the T20 World Cup 2026 have taken a major hit after veteran fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, aged 35, was officially ruled out of the tournament. Cricket Australia confirmed that the pacer has not recovered sufficiently from ongoing injuries and will not travel with the squad.

The tournament is set to begin across India and Sri Lanka, with Australia entering the competition amid fitness concerns and inconsistent form.

Injuries force late withdrawal

Selectors had initially hoped Hazlewood could return during the later stages of the competition. However, chairman of selectors Tony Dodemaide said medical advice suggested pushing his recovery could increase the risk of further injury.

Hazlewood has not played competitive cricket since November and also missed the entire Ashes series against England, highlighting the extent of his fitness issues.

Australia’s pace attack faces growing concerns

Earlier, pace spearhead and Test captain Pat Cummins was already ruled out due to a lower back injury, with Ben Dwarshuis drafted into the squad. With Hazlewood now unavailable, Australia’s bowling depth will be tested, especially in high-pressure matches.

Selectors indicated they would delay naming a permanent replacement, stating that current squad options provide enough cover for the initial fixtures.

Form slump adds pressure before Group B matches

Australia head into the World Cup following a 3-0 warm-up series defeat to Pakistan and are currently winless in their last five T20 internationals. Analysts believe the loss of experienced bowlers could impact both team balance and leadership within the attack.

The side will play all their Group B matches in Sri Lanka, opening their campaign against Ireland in Colombo on February 11, followed by fixtures against Sri Lanka, Oman and Zimbabwe.

Why fans and rivals should pay attention

With two senior pacers unavailable, Australia may rely more on emerging players and all-rounders to manage workloads. Experts say injuries at this stage could influence not just match results but also tactical decisions across the tournament.
