The Supreme Court has taken a stern view of the controversy surrounding Madhya Pradesh minister Vijay Shah, who allegedly referred to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi as a “sister of terrorists” during Operation Sindoor.

The court on Monday directed the Madhya Pradesh government to decide within two weeks whether it will grant sanction to prosecute the minister.

During the hearing, the Chief Justice remarked that the matter had been pending far too long and questioned the state’s reluctance to take a clear position. The petition seeks criminal proceedings against the minister for his remarks made while criticising the Army officer.

The controversy broke out when Minister Shah allegedly made derogatory remarks targeting Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had led a crucial segment of Operation Sindoor. His comments sparked widespread backlash from veterans, civil society groups, and opposition leaders who demanded legal action.
