Supreme Court Postpones Hearing on Sonam Wangchuk’s Detention Case to October 29

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, deferred the hearing on the plea filed by Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). The court adjourned proceedings to October 29, following indications that Ms. Angmo intends to amend her petition.

Court Proceedings and Submissions

A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria noted an affidavit filed by the Jodhpur jailor, confirming that Wangchuk had met with his elder brother and legal counsel.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Ms. Angmo, informed the court that an application would be filed to amend the petition to specifically challenge the grounds for Wangchuk’s detention.

During the hearing, Mr. Sibal requested that Wangchuk be allowed to exchange written notes with his wife. The court acknowledged the submission of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who stated that the government had no objection to such an exchange.

Background of Detention

Sonam Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act on September 26, 2025, shortly after violent protests erupted in Ladakh, demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status for the Union Territory. The protests resulted in four fatalities and over 90 injuries, according to official reports. Authorities accused Wangchuk of inciting the violence.

The NSA allows the central or state governments to detain individuals to prevent actions “prejudicial to the defence of India.” The law permits detention for a maximum of 12 months, though it can be revoked earlier at the government’s discretion.

Wangchuk is currently lodged in Jodhpur Jail, Rajasthan.
