Stranger Things 5 Smashes Netflix Records with Biggest English-Language Debut Ever

Netflix’s Stranger Things 5 has officially become the streaming platform’s largest English-language premiere ever, drawing in 59.6 million views in its first five days, according to Variety. The milestone makes it Netflix’s third biggest series debut overall, trailing only the Korean hit Squid Game seasons two and three.

The first four episodes of the final eight dropped simultaneously, generating a significant jump in viewership from season four, which amassed roughly 22 million views (287 million hours watched) in 2022. The fifth season’s numbers represent a 171% increase, though season four’s tally counted just three days of streaming.

Ahead of the season five premiere, all previous Stranger Things seasons simultaneously landed in Netflix’s top 10, a first for any show on the platform. The surge of viewers caused temporary streaming disruptions, despite Netflix increasing bandwidth by 30% to prevent crashes, series co-creator Ross Duffer revealed on Instagram.

Returning to Hawkins

Premiering in 2016, Stranger Things quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular English-language series, launching stars like Millie Bobby Brown, Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer, and others. Season five picks up in Hawkins, Indiana, with a time jump to reflect the actors’ transition into adulthood. Winona Ryder and David Harbour reprise their roles alongside the returning cast.

The final season, three years in the making, promises high stakes, with co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer teasing “the most violent death of any season.” Critics have praised the action-packed premiere episodes. The Guardian’s Jack Seale described the fourth episode as “solidly thrilling 90 minutes of flame-throwing, bullet-dodging spectacle”, culminating in a moment fans are sure to remember.

The final three episodes of Stranger Things 5 will drop on Christmas Day, with the series finale slated for 31 December 2025.
