The Indian stock market experienced a turbulent week, marked by escalating geopolitical tensions and volatile global cues. Both the Sensex and Nifty 50 closed the week sharply lower, reflecting investor unease.

Expert Insights

According to Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money,

"Indian equity markets remained volatile and under pressure throughout the week, with sentiment continuing to stay fragile amid persistent geopolitical tensions, elevated crude oil prices, and sustained foreign outflows."

He added that the market's structure remains weak, with indices struggling to maintain gains.

Top 5 Market Triggers

Several factors are expected to influence the Indian stock market in the coming week:

  1. US-Iran Ceasefire Talks: The possibility of negotiations between the US and Iran remains uncertain. Trump's extended deadline of April 6 for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz adds pressure.
  2. Crude Oil Prices: Brent crude settled above $112 per barrel on Friday, with prices potentially hovering between $98–115, impacting inflation and macro stability.
  3. Rupee vs Dollar: The Indian rupee weakened past 94 against the US dollar, driven by high crude oil prices and capital outflows.
  4. Gold and Silver Prices: Precious metals saw a jump as investors bought on dips, following an earlier pullback.
  5. FII Outflows: Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold domestic equities worth ₹1,13,810 crore in March, with total outflows reaching ₹1,27,157 crore this year.

Rupee's Decline

The Indian rupee's weakness is a significant concern. According to Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst at LKP Securities,

"Rupee continued its sharp weakness, falling another 0.80% to 94.70 against the dollar, as rising crude prices intensify pressure on India’s import bill."

Technically, 94.00 now acts as key resistance, while the next crucial support is seen near 95.00.

FII Selling Pressure

Foreign investors continue to withdraw funds from Indian markets, primarily due to geopolitical risks and the performance of other markets. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments Limited, noted that poor returns compared to other markets are a key factor.

He added that a resolution to the conflict in West Asia and a decline in crude prices are necessary for FIIs to change their selling strategy.

Precious Metals Volatility

Gold and silver prices experienced volatility. Spot gold gained 2.6% to $4,491.78 per ounce after reaching an intraday high of $4,554.39, while spot silver advanced 2.2% to $69.54 per ounce.

Ponmudi R explained that the commodities market is stabilizing after last week's correction, particularly in precious metals, as prices attempt to rebuild momentum amid mixed global cues.

What to Watch Next

Investors should closely monitor developments regarding US-Iran talks and their impact on crude oil prices. Additionally, keep an eye on foreign investor activity and any potential shifts in global market sentiment, which will likely dictate near-term market direction.
