Starbucks Appoints Indian-Origin Tech Leader Anand Varadarajan as Global CTO

Global coffee chain Starbucks has named Indian-origin technology executive Anand Varadarajan as its new Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), tasking the former Amazon leader with overseeing the company’s worldwide technology strategy and operations.

According to a statement issued by Starbucks and cited by news agency PTI, Varadarajan will take charge on January 19. He will become part of Starbucks’ Executive Leadership Team and will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Brian Niccol.

Varadarajan succeeds Deb Hall Lefevre, who retired in September after leading Starbucks’ technology function. Following her departure, the company had appointed Ningyu Chen as interim CTO while it conducted a global search for a permanent replacement.

Announcing the appointment, Starbucks said Varadarajan brings extensive experience in building secure, scalable and reliable technology systems, with a strong focus on customer-centric innovation and operational excellence.

Varadarajan spent nearly 19 years at Amazon, where he worked closely on building customer-focused platforms across multiple businesses. In his most recent role, he led technology and supply-chain systems for Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores division, a portfolio that includes some of the company’s most operationally intensive businesses.

Before Amazon, he worked as a software engineer at Oracle and with several startups, giving him experience across both large enterprises and fast-growing technology environments.

Anand Varadarajan is an alumnus of IIT Madras, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. He later completed a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering at Purdue University and a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Washington, reflecting a rare blend of engineering and advanced computing expertise.
