SpiceJet Flight Cancelled After Passengers Protest Over Failed AC

Passenger Outcry Over Stifling Conditions Forces Flight Cancellation

New Delhi | August 12, 2026

Chaos erupted at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport on the night of Tuesday, August 11, 2026, when passengers on a SpiceJet flight bound for Pune faced severe discomfort due to a critical failure in the air conditioning and ventilation system. The intense heat and lack of air caused distress among the approximately 100 passengers on board.

Demands for Flight Halt and Subsequent Cancellation

The situation escalated as passengers, experiencing suffocation and extreme heat, demanded that the flight be grounded. Their vocal protests led to the aircraft, which had already begun taxiing towards the runway, being brought back to the bay and ultimately resulted in the complete cancellation of the flight. An alternative aircraft was arranged later to transport the passengers to Pune.

The incident occurred shortly after the scheduled departure time of around 9:55 PM. Shortly after passengers boarded, the cabin temperature began to rise continuously. The malfunctioning air conditioning system created a hot and stifling environment inside the aircraft, with insufficient air circulation exacerbating the problem.

Passengers Endure Discomfort and Delay

Many passengers were seen drenched in sweat and fanning themselves manually. Children and elderly passengers were particularly affected, with some complaining of breathing difficulties. Initially, some passengers hoped the air conditioning would function after takeoff, but as the cabin temperature continued to climb, their patience wore thin.

Passengers felt that proceeding with the flight under these conditions would be unsafe and insisted that the flight should not depart until the cabin temperature and ventilation were normalized. Reports indicate the aircraft was moving towards the runway when the persistent and vocal protests by passengers compelled the airline management to return the aircraft to the bay.

During this period, there were heated exchanges between airline staff and passengers both inside and outside the aircraft. Passengers even demanded that the aircraft doors be opened to allow them to disembark, further escalating the sensitivity of the situation.

Extended Wait and Alternative Arrangements

The technical malfunction resulted in passengers enduring a wait of several hours, first on the aircraft and then at the airport. Approximately seven hours after the scheduled departure, an alternative aircraft was arranged around 5 AM on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. This replacement flight departed for Pune and reached its destination around 7 AM, causing significant inconvenience and delay for all passengers.

Questions Raised Over Airline's Handling of the Situation

This incident has raised serious questions about SpiceJet's ability to manage technical issues and its passenger amenity arrangements. Many passengers expressed dissatisfaction with the airline's communication regarding the problem and the delay in its resolution. Complaints also surfaced regarding the inadequacy of basic facilities like food and refreshments during the prolonged wait.

Passengers described the experience of struggling with heat and suffocation, followed by a seven-hour wait for an alternative flight, as extremely distressing, especially for children and the elderly. SpiceJet has expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the passengers and prioritized arranging an alternative aircraft to ensure they reached their destination.

However, the incident once again highlights the critical need for thorough technical inspections of aircraft before flights and prompt relief measures for passengers during emergencies. Ensuring cabin temperature control for aircraft parked on the ground during hot weather and strict adherence to safety protocols are paramount for passenger safety and comfort.
