Royal Society Recognizes Indian Scientists

Soumya Swaminathan and Manindra Agrawal have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society in the UK. They are among 90 international researchers to receive this honor.

This recognition comes more than 50 years after Soumya Swaminathan's father, MS Swaminathan, was also named a Fellow.

About the Fellows

Dr. Manindra Agrawal is the Director of IIT Kanpur. He is globally recognized for his work in Complexity Theory and Cryptography.

Soumya Swaminathan is the former chief scientist to the World Health Organization and Chairperson of the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation.

Signing Ceremony

A signing ceremony is scheduled for July 10th. The Fellows will sign a register that was also signed by Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton.

Swaminathan plans to view the page where her father signed the register in 1973.

Joining Esteemed Company

The fellows join the ranks of Stephen Hawking, Albert Einstein, and Lise Meitner. The Royal Society noted that about 26 percent of this year's intake of Fellows and Honorary Fellows are women.
